本記事では、間違いやすい前置詞の例をいくつか挙げたいと思います。
前置詞の使い方で難しいのは三次元空間における位置表現だと思います。
二次元の平面における位置関係は比較的シンプルです。例えば、ドキュメントで「以下に例を挙げます。」という文を英訳する場合、"Examples are shown below."や"The following are examples."などと訳すと思いますが、「以下」に対応する前置詞は"below"であることは容易にわかると思います。しかし、三次元空間での位置関係を表すのは簡単ではありません。
工業製品製造装置のマニュアルなどを想定して、三次元空間における位置関係を表す前置詞の用法で日本人の翻訳者が間違えやすい例をいくつか以下に挙げました。
１）製品がトレーの奥側にあります。
〇 A product is in the back of the tray. ※１
〇 A product is at the back of the tray.（google翻訳） ※１
〇 A product is in the center back of the tray.
〇 A product is centered at the back of the tray.
☓ A product is at the back side of the tray. ※2
☓ A product is in the back side of the tray. ※2
【備考】
※１ アメリカ英語ではin the back of、イギリス英語では at the back ofを使う傾向があるようです。 アメリカ人にとって、at the back ofはin the back ofより少し硬い印象に感じるようです。ちなみにgoogle翻訳はこのセンテンスを出力しました。
※２「奥側」を辞書で引くと back side が出てきます。「トレーの奥側に」をat the back of the tray やin the back of the trayとすると、トレーの裏面にあるという意味になってしまいます。ちなみに、backsideは「お尻」という意味もあるので、使用は避けた方がよいと思います。
２）製品がトレーの手前側にあります。
◎ A product is in the front of the tray.
〇 A product is at the front of the tray.
☓ A product is in front of the tray. ※１
☓ Product is on the front side of the tray It is located in.（google翻訳）※２
【備考】
※１ theの冠詞がないin front ofだと、トレーの手前にあるという意味になってしまうので誤りです。
※２ google翻訳の訳だと、製品がトレーの内側に置かれているのか、外側に置かれているのか明確にわからないです。また、「on the front side of the tray」と「It is located in」は、同じ内容を繰り返していて冗長です。
３）製品がトレーの前にあります。
〇 A product is in front of the tray.（google翻訳）
☓ A product is in the front of the tray. ※１
【備考】
※１The を付けてIn the front ofとすると、トレーの中に入っているという意味になってしまいます。
４）本機背面には冷却ファンが設けられてます。
◎ A cooling fan is placed on the back of the device. ※１
〇 A cooling fan is placed at the back of the device.
△ There is a cooling fan on the back of the machine.（google翻訳）※２
【備考】
※1 「背面」は直訳的にthe back sideではなく、本文のようにthe backが良いです。
※2 前置詞の選択は正しいですが、"there is"は意味がないので不要です。
５）本機背面の前方に物を置かないでください。
◎ Do not put any object behind the cooling fan on the back fo the machine that may intercept the air flow from it.
☓ Do not put any object at the cooling fan on the back of the machine that may intercept the air flow from it. ※１
☓ Do not put any object on the back of cooling fan on the back of the machine that may intercept the air flow from it. ※１
△ Do not place anything in front of the rear of the machine.（google翻訳）※２
【備考】
※１ 注意文として、onやatを使うのは問題ないですが、この例では障害物が本機背面の冷却ファンに接触していないという状況なのでonやatは誤りです。
※２ in front of the rear ofは、間違いではありませんが分かりにくいです。いかにも機械翻訳が出力した訳で不自然です。
６）本機背面の冷却ファンに物で塞がないでください。
◎ Do not put any object on the back of the cooling fan of the machine that may intercept the air flow from it.
〇 Do not put any object at the back of the cooling fan of the machine that may intercept the air flow from it.
△ Do not put any object behind the cooling fan of the machine that may intercept the air flow from it. ※１
☓ Do not block the cooling fan on the back of the unit with objects.（google翻訳）
【備考】
※１ 注意文としてbehindでも問題ないと思いますが、障害物が冷却ファンに接していることを強調するのであればonやatが良いと思います。
※２ 「物を使って（いたずらに）冷却ファンを塞がないでください。」というニュアンスに変わってしまいました。
7）ボタンの右側の画面には、検出された欠陥が表示されています。
〇 The window to the right of the buttons displays detected defects.
☓ The window on the right of the buttons displays detected defects. ※1
【備考】
※1 window on the right of the buttons だと、ボタン右側に隣接して画面が配置されているイメージになってしますので、上の図と少し違います。
