「物」、「モノ」を表す英単語は、item、object、thingなどがありますが、それぞれ用法が少しが異なります。
objectは、知覚できる、あるいは触ることができる「物体」を表します。ただし、実際には触ることができないソフトウェアの世界でも使われています。
例：object oriented language（オブジェクト指向言語）、binary object（バイナリオブジェクト）
itemも物理的に形がある「物体」に使います。
また、itemはドキュメントに記載するモノに関する一覧、物のグループ、あるいはモノの集合において、itemはある１つの物に対応します。
thingも、物理的な「物体」を指します。
しかし、thingがitemやobjectと違う点は、「考え」、「概念」、「行動」、「事実」などの無形の概念的なことにも使うことです。
