ソフトウェアにおける不具合は、「エラー」、「バグ」、「障害」など、さまざまな呼び方がありますが、英文を書くときにどの単語を使うのか迷うことがあると思います。
ある海外のソフトウェアテスト専門の会社のサイト（https://www.360logica.com/blog/difference-between-defect-error-bug-failure-and-fault/）で、以下のようにソフトウェアでの不具合をwrong、extra、error、bug、faultに分類して定義していますので紹介したいと思います。
ただし、この定義は、組織によって異なる場合がありますので、あくまでも参考としてご覧ください。
wrong:
When requirements are implemented not in the right way. This defect is a variance from the given specification. It is Wrong!
要求仕様通りに実装されていない。これは、仕様と食い違いが原因である。
missing:
A requirement of the customer that was not fulfilled. This is a variance from the specifications, an indication that a specification was not implemented, or a requirement of the customer was not noted correctly.
missingとは、顧客の要求が未実装であること。これは、仕様との食い違い、仕様が実装されていない、あるいは顧客の仕様が正しくないことから起こる。
extra:
A requirement incorporated into the product that was not given by the end customer. This is always a variance from the specification, but may be an attribute desired by the user of the product. However, it is considered a defect because it’s a variance from the existing requirements.
extraとは、顧客の要件になく、製品に実装されている機能を示す。仕様から逸脱しているが、ユーザーが望む属性である場合もある。ただし、要件とは異なるため欠陥と見なされる。
error:
An error is a mistake, misconception, or misunderstanding on the part of a software developer. In the category of developer we include software engineers, programmers, analysts, and testers. For example, a developer may misunderstand a de-sign notation, or a programmer might type a variable name incorrectly – leads to an Error. It is the one which is generated because of wrong login, loop or due to syntax. Error normally arises in software.
errorは、ソフトウェア開発者のミスや誤解によっても起こる。ここで、開発者とは、ソフトウェアエンジニア、プログラマー、アナリスト、テスターのことを指す。開発者が設計表記（たとえば、フローチャート、擬似コードなど）を誤解したり、またはプログラマが変数名を誤ってコーディングしたりすると、エラーの発生原因になる。また、間違ったログイン、誤ったループ条件、あるいはシンタックス違反などでもerrorが発生する。一般に、errorはソフトウェアで起こる不具合を指す。
bug:
A bug is the result of a coding error. An Error found in the development environment before the product is shipped to the customer. A programming error that causes a program to work poorly, produce incorrect results or crash. An error in software or hardware that causes a program to malfunction. Bug is terminology of Tester.
bugとは、コーディング誤りによる結果を指す。製品が顧客に納品される前に開発環境で見つかった不具合である。 プログラムの動作不良、誤った結果の生成、またはクラッシュを引き起こすプログラミングの誤りが原因である。 ソフトウェアまたはハードウェアの誤りにより、プログラムの誤動作を引き起こす。bugとは、テスターが頻繁に使う用語である。
failure:
A failure is the inability of a software system or component to perform its required functions within specified performance requirements. When a defect reaches the end customer it is called a Failure. During development Failures are usually observed by testers.
failureとは、ソフトウェアシステムまたはコンポーネントの機能が顧客の望む性能要件を満足していないことを指す。欠陥が最終的に顧客に納品されたときに、failureと呼ばれる。 テスターが開発中に発見できる問題である。
fault:
An incorrect step, process or data definition in a computer program which causes the program to perform in an unintended or unanticipated manner. A fault is introduced into the software as the result of an error. It is an anomaly in the software that may cause it to behave incorrectly, and not according to its specification.
誤った手順、誤った方法、あるいは誤ったデータ定義でプログラムを実行させた時の誤った結果をfaultと呼ぶ。 ソフトウェアが仕様通りに正しく動作しない異常な状態を表す。
